- Virtual drive is a device that appears as an ordinary physical disc drive to the operating system . Such devices are added to the operating system with special software called a disc emulator.
- CD/DVD emulation — is an imitation of the drive creation via the special software. CD/DVD disc image files are used as real CD/DVD discs for such virtual CD/DVD drives.

- Image editor is a part of DAEMON Tools Pro software functionality intended for CD/DVD disc images editing and new images compilation.
- Image grabbing is copying all content and structure of file system and data from CD/DVD disc to the file (sometimes into several files) called image file to save it to the hard drive or another media.

- RMPS: DPM can be observed and subsequently encoded into a Recordable Media Physical Signature(RMPS). In concern with emulation software, RMPS can reproduce the effects of DPM for backup copies of CD/DVD media. This technique was invented by DAEMON Tools, for which it created the mdx / mds file formats.
